HeartWare is a medical device company developing a family of implantable Left Ventricular Assist Devices ("LVADs") for the treatment of advanced heart failure. The company is listed on the Australian Securities Exchange.

The HVAD^TM pump is a small centrifugal blood pump capable of generating up to 10 litres per minute of forward flow. The pump is designed to draw blood from the apex of the left ventricle and to propel it through an outflow graft connected to the patient's ascending aorta. The device is implanted above the patient's diaphragm within the pericardial space.

HeartWare's HVAD^TM System is currently the subject of both an international and a US clinical trial.  

Patient enrolment in the international clinical trial has been completed. The company applied in September 2008 for CE Mark, which, when granted, will allow commercial sales of the System in Europe. CE Mark is expected in late 2008 or early 2009.  

In May 2008 the US FDA granted HeartWare conditional approval to conduct a clinical tial in the United States. Enrolment in the US clinical trial comenced in August 2008 and is ongoing.  The trial will enrol up to 150 patients across a maximum of 28 centres.

HVAD^TM System

The MVAD^TM Left Ventricular Assist Device is a development-stage axial flow ventricular assist device, approximately one third the size of the HVAD^TM device. The MVAD^TM pump is based on the same proprietary impeller suspension technology used in the HVAD^TM device, with its single moving part held in place through a combination of passive-magnetic and hydrodynamic forces. Like the HVAD^TM pump, the MVAD^TM pump is designed to support the heart's full cardiac output.

The MVAD^TM Device is currently in preclinical studies aimed at developing novel, less-invasive techniques for implanting the device.
